RARE collector's find! I found it in France, and it's an 1800s or earlier official comparative collection of seals, some Royal, likely property of a government and used in confirming correspondence. The old handmade folding "book" is one long piece that folds in accordion manner so can be opened to display the entire collection along with your collection of wax seals. I've shown it in our final photo with a few of my own so you can have a feel of display, size, and the ambiance of a grouping. Those other items are not included in this offering, of course. The "book" is good sized and outer covering is cloth. I've shown it from all angles of view and also detailed some of the seals in enlargement for your pleasure. There's a written reference to Bolivia, though as noted, I bought it from a Paris estate. The section of each "page" where the seals are mounted is recessed to protect them from damage, and they remain in wonderful condition. Could certainly be framed as well as displayed open as I've shown it. When closed, it completely protects the 30 seals. Outer measurement is 9.5" x 6" and 1.5" deep when closed fully. Made so it can be opened to any view and lie perfectly flat. A museum piece!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I haven't taken time to do research on the seals within. The cover is embossed "Balayeuse Mondaine", which is interesting, too. It normally refers to the ruffles at bottom of a lady's skirt. I suppose it has to do with the pleated manner of opening the panel. Some wear to corners, it's a fabric coated card construction, after all. The 30 seals all look to be very complete. Some have French names and military title noted in quill pen writing. A Count; a Vice Admiral among them. Crests, all just waiting for you to do the most fun part - researching its story. The spines at each fold remain strong and supple, no tearing. I could detect a faint scent when I first purchased it, perhaps the smell of old bees wax/sealing wax, a tiny bit of the smell of old book. However, in open, I'm no longer able to pick it up. Just a mention, though. It's not anything that will offend or fill a room.
In final image I also show an 1800s French engraver's sample book I've owned for decades. We've used it countless times in photos of antique wax seals, and people have always tried to get us to sell it. Over 300 samples in top quality leather album, it's being offered separately. Don't miss either of these fabulous and rare items.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
