Fabulous large and unusual mourning brooch, early Victorian and likely French made, it has a generous body of 14k gold that incorporates a locket in center and a generous tight woven hair outer "belt", complete with gold buckle and banner. The size of it is remarkable as well as is the design, as it is 2.25" x 1.75" oval and about 3/8" in depth overall. Locket front and back, the front one displays a variety of hair colors worked into a cornucopia and flowers. I've never seen a cornucopia before in one of these. Nice long gold pin with c-clamp, wearable or a fabulous display and collection piece.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, it has one flaw, and that is the cover glass on the locket at its backside has a crack across it. Backside locket appears to have another tightly woven plaiting of chestnut or brunette hair. A few small crimps on the edging of gold, as it holds the rounded plaiting of hair at outer border. A seed pearl or two within front locket, too.
