Sitter ID'd: An exceptionally personal and fine item, both the oil painting on panel and the hand carved elaborate and large frame made for it. Obviously it was a combination of 2 artisans at their best. The painting is, as noted, an oil portrait done on panel or board, not on stretched canvas. It is signed and dated, so we know this is a 1906 painting by G. Ruffini. A generous soul emailed us with the name of the sitter: "Heinrich von Pirteich, 1841-1920, a General in the joint army of Austria-Hungary, and Reich Minister of War of Austri-Hungary. He is the one who reformed the army by introducing machine guns and by forcing the conversion to a more modern artillery park" (Wikipedia). We've looked him up and it is definitely him. You'll find him and history about him easily online. I can find nothing about the artist, but didn't try very hard. It is the frame that most interest me. What a fabulous hand carved work of art it truly is. Should you not be in love with the painting, you could certainly have this one as a mirror frame. Just look at the work that's gone into it. Exceptional! Very thick, you'll never see anything quite like it. More sculpture than frame, and at 21 7/8" tall and 16" wide, up to 3 7/8" in depth, just spectacular!
Very good to excellent condition. The painting has a bit of surface grime which could benefit from a cleaning. I didn't do any at all on it. The frame is in excellent condition without so much as a small chip that I can find. French in feel, rocaille, shells, figural and florals. Wood backing is the old original and might reveal more about the gentleman. We didn't take it off to check for any ID that might be noted within.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
