An exceptional 19th century hand carved wood pocket watch stand here, and I'm not quite certain that it's Black Forest though it could be. The rather uniques wagging of florals and the rather neoclassical design aspects to the lower part make me think it's either French or Italian carved. In any case, the piece is entirely wood, beautifully crafted and in beautiful condition. I find no chips at all, no breaks and only a few tiny holes of an ancient wood worm there around the face. Not even a carved ball of gadrooned trim is chipped away around that face or it's surround. A superb old beauty, isn't it. Hinged wooded easel-like stand on back holds it at a perfect angle for viewing ones pocket watch at bedside or mantel for the night. These stands were the holder of the watch for the night, and upon rising the owner would remove the watch for wear through his or her day. The watch shown is a prop and is not included in the offering, of course. Just the beautiful old stand. It is 9" tall, 7" wide and 1.5" deep. The watch shown is showing 4cm, or 1.5" diameter of the face, and the opening from back is approximately 2" wide and slightly over .5" depth.
Very good to excellent condition without any chips or cracks, no breaks. There are a few tiny wood worm holes that remain probably a century after any small infestation and you see them all on the surround of the face of the watch opening. No others anywhere and no sponginess or pithiness. Very mild sign of the era and nothing active there. A splendid stand.
