A wonderful Grand Tour souvenir, large eglomise (back-painted glass) miniature painting of England's Buckingham Palace, with a splendid specimen carbuncle of banded agate affixed to the underside. Extra large, it's a setting of rolled gold or pinchbeck, all the look of fine gold but not the price. The long pin and c-clamp and style all help us date it mid-1800s, Victorian era.
Very good to excellent condition, no chips or breaks anywhere to be reported. There is an area showing flaked paint on backside of that outer convex glass, upper 1/4 of image, doesn't impinge on the palace painting or foreground but does the sky. This is fairly typical of the back-painted glass items of its time, but in wear or display it is really special, lovely, and the rarity of it makes it all the more appealing. That fabulous large oval specimen on back, banded agate, has its own added value. Certainly a treasured Grand Tour souvenir worthy of any collection.
