Portrait, oil on linen canvas, stretched and framed
Artist signature but not readable. Dated 1891, perhaps "J. Rabin" ?
Frame: 27" x 23" and 1 3/8" depth, wood (68 cm x 60 cm)
Painting: 21 3/4" x 18" (55 cm x 46 cm)
A wonderful French Impressionist painting of a woman, signed by the artist and dated 1891, this oil painting on stretched linen canvas is framed a bit later on and presents beautifully. Nicely framed (frame is not antique) and ready to hang. A beautiful palette used on this charming woman, who is ID'd on the frame plate as Alice Beljame, (born Bouvard, - 1843 - 1901), so painted 10 years before her death at age 57, making her 47 in this portrait. A beautiful woman in her maturity, well dressed and showing a lovely simple brooch at neck. I can find genealogy reference to this woman but so far nothing more. You'll enjoy doing your own research and perhaps find the artist via the family information online.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, a splendid blending of a lot of color into that background from which the figure emerges, typical of the Impressionists. Her portrait is intimate and lovely, very regal and serene. No damage to the old painting or canvas, and the frame is relatively modern, not antique and shows it very well. Ready to hang and enjoy. Measurements also noted on the photos.
