An exquisite c.1800-1820 table snuff in gorgeous old burled wood that is beset with a portrait in miniature of a beautiful young French woman in black gown, jet jewelry. The painting is signed by artist at about the 4 o'clock position, and I believe it says "LEANDRI". Our subject looks to be about 17, and her blue eyes and dark hair, cupid bow mouth show her beauty to be natural. A simple black empire gown with white lace at the drop shoulder is accented by what appears to be a black heart on black beaded necklace. The utter lack of other adornment makes me think this is a young woman in mourning, and perhaps she's memorialized the loss of a young husband, or even a father. The period is that of the Napoleonic wars, remember, and many young soldiers were lost to those who loved them at home, so many mourning themed painting and symbols can be found in these old portraits.
Very good condition for age and type. There is some light disruption to the painting, visible in our images but not distracting (to my eye) in actual size and view. The box is of very fine exotic grained wood, and is in fine form without breaks or chips, though there's one knot hole that shows as an imperfection at the outer rim of the bottom half of box, which you can see is a grain issue and not really a chip. An interesting patch in of trapezoid form can be seen on bottom of box, as well as the sound insets where other knots were removed from this one - an interesting original craftsmanship note. The cover glass is still there, intact. The gold mat/frame tests at 12k gold. The interior has the old original lining, one thin raised lip area of chip, which you can clearly evaluate in our photos.
