Another exceptionally fine portrait in miniature, a red-vested French Revolutionary gentleman whose visage is so handsomely captured by a very capable artist who has not signed his or her work. I have not taken this painting out of its wooden frame to see if there might be a signature on the outer rim of the painting, or on the backside, and will leave that decision to the next owner. Suffice it to say, the painting is as detailed and fine as if it were a life-sized painting rather than a less than 1" high head. I am fascinated by any artist's ability to capture so much in such a tiny painting, and always thrill to see these pre-photography reminders of people whose lives have otherwise receded into obscure history. What did this man do? Did he fight in the Revolution, or command a rebellion force? Alas, we can't know his story. Just his remarkable portrait survives him.
Very good to excellent condition, painted by hand in gouache on a round panel, framed in the typical frame of his era: wood square with turned recess and a brass mounted aperture. Measurements noted on photos, and I see no loss at all in this painting to report.
