Fabulous & RARE complete SIX piece antique Victorian era desk set including perpetual calendar, inkwell, postal scale, stamps box, pen tray and blotter, all in ornate heavy black gutta percha and as elegant as can be! Gutta percha, that earliest precursor to plastics (arguably) was a c.1840s-50s cast-able substance of various reported ingredients (some say blood proteins were used as a binder), used for a variety of items from union cases for early daguerreotype and tintype photography to fancy desk items like frames, perpetual calendars and inkwells. We've offered such items through the years and people are always thrilled by the opulent detail to the 'carving' on what might otherwise look like a hand carved wood item. To get such fine detail without the labor of carving, molds were used and this 'gutta percha' poured and packed into the forms 'til it dried and hardened. This set in a deep jet black with fabulous detail to every piece and all in wonderful condition! Perfect desk or writing table top decorative pieces!
Very good to excellent condition. Possibly a tiny nip or two to the gutta percha but no large chips, cracks or repairs to note. Some wear or fading to the black finish visible on the stamps box and a bit on the blotter but all in overall superb condition. The thermometer and gilded plaque appear to be replacements for a likely broken original thermometer. The calendar dials are card and appear to be in great shape. See pictures for all measurements.
