Fine Antique Black Forest Hand Carved Vanity or Wall Mirror. Rocaille, and 13.5" Long. Fabulous!
A beauty, this is a late 1800s to earliest 1900s hand mirror with a stunning hand carved frame, typical of the Black Forest carvings, this one might be French or certainly shows French influences in the style. Very Louis XVI, rocaille and ornamentation we see in the fine old carved cabinetry and wall panels. The back is wood, too, bears the monogram as you see it. I think it can be interpreted in several ways so we'll leave it to you to see if your own initials can be seen therein. These are wonderful to hang on the wall in a bathroom, gather several together for a collection display. I have them in my own bathrooms. They also are wonderful to place flat on a dressing table and use it for a tray for your perfumes - rest them on the glass mirror portion.
Very good condition for age and type. The carving is very good. It's quite intricate, so perhaps there might be a very tiny nip somewhere, but there are not any serious chips nor cracks to disclose. The old original thick beveled glass mirror is in place, intricately beveled just for this opening, and it does not have loss to the silvering as you can see. Measurements are noted on the photos, but this one is 13.5" long and 6" widest. 1.75" at deepest point.
If you've followed us for a while you know I'm a big fan of the old hand carved "Black Forest" items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, "fruits of the hunt". I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques - from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy - these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
