Antique Victorian Era French Art Glass 3- Tube Vase, Enamel and Ormolu Wire - Electric Blue Epergne c. 1850
Wildly popular in Victorian times, the old French glass triple epergne you see here has become very rare over time as so many have not survived. I'm thrilled to bring this large and gorgeous one to our customers for that very reason. The old electric blue 'tubes' are each mouth blown and formed and then are cut at a charp angle, the rim gilted. There are rim fittings over which the twisted brass wire is mounted and then those wires are twisted to form a framework turning the 3 works of glassmaker's art into a freestanding vase or centerpiece that is as beautiful without as with flowers. You'll note that there are thick impasto enamel florals decorating each and on the darker of the 3, a lovely bird, as well. With the height at 10", and each 'tube' about 1.5" in diameter, it's large and quite a stunning piece all on its own. I must set it out with a few other of our French glass items and perhaps a framed photo of family - I have the perfect little tabletop in mind. Perhaps you do, too?
Very good to excellent condition throughout for age and type. The 3 separate glass vases are each remarkably unscathed for age, and while they've got some rub to the gilted top rims, there really aren't any chips or cracks. Perhaps a slight roughness to the cut that one can feel more than see, and which might be noted as 'nips' here or there in the original cutting, it's remarkable that these have all survived with so little keeping them from 'excellent'. The twisted brass wire framework, typical of French whimsical Palais Royal glassworks of the era, is a bit tarnished by time and could be returned to a high bright gold finish with a bit of polish and 'elbow grease', as they say, but we will leave it as found because some seem to prefer the very old patina. Thick enema is still just beautiful, perhaps a tiny flaked off tip to a petal or something, but nothing noticeable at all. No loss to the bird, either. Isn't this just outstanding!
