One of the most magnificent antique carvings we've had, and you know we've had lots of fabulous museum pieces over the years. This extra large (life-size) carving is of old growth forest wood so dense, it weighs a ton. Solid wood and entirely carved from a single piece upon which one 1" panel is attached as the top of the shelf. The face is likely that of mythical God of drink and merriment, Bacchus, as there are grape clusters and leaves worked into the carving along with acanthus. The quality would put this one in any of the finest museums in Italy or France, and we think it is either an Italian or French work though of course it's impossible to know for sure. No signature, but the work is truly remarkably fine. This is carved to go into a corner placement, which is rather unique, as well. Think of the best corner spot to show him off. Solid and heavy, the brackets on the shelf are made very strong as well. You can see those in our images for detail. Again, this is a solid block of old forest growth wood, heavy and dense. Fabulous RARE find! I bought this in France. The measurements are on photos but it is 21" tall or 23.5" adding in the steel brackets, and it is 11" widest on each side, or 13" deep from the outer center of the rounded front. Remember, it fits into a corner - fabulous piece!
Very good to excellent condition, the solid and heavy carved wood sculpture is a fine work of art, large and heavy. Brackets for hanging are large, sturdy and ready to use. It's probably been hanging in some Chateau for 200-300 years. Very clean now, and in our images it appears shiny but that is not varnish. It is just the wood oil we used to feed the old wood and keep it supple. It has absorbed a bit more since photos were taken and has now the deep satin wood finish you're used to in the finest old carvings. Not shiny! HEAVY, the piece weighs 22.8 lbs (10.3 kg)! This is a single corner shelf, not a pair - just to be certain you don't think you're buying two.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
