Fine antique French sterling silver Napoleonic era 8pc dessert or entremet sized knife set, hallmarked silver blades with elegant ebony & silver handles with shield shaped inlays! One of several sets of antique French knives that we're adding this week so, be sure to browse some while you're with us. Thanks! This a fabulous setting for eight, ebony or ebonized wood handles with shield shaped sterling cartouche inlays! The blades in the older style with the straight sharp edge and curved blade tops. All of the blades bear the French 1798-1809 Coq hallmarks, the tiny number "2" within those marks designate them as being in at least .800 silver which is common in knife blades for the added strength (80% pure and just under the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). Silversmith marks are legible on all, "L.J.V." on five and "P.D." on the other three knives but I had not been able to find definitive reference to them. Our friend who lends his excellent research and sources for same tells me the silversmith is (L.J.V): Voudenet L J, in business between 1812/13-1822, so the mystery is solved. (Thank you, my friend!). A marvelous set, enjoy!
Very good condition. No bends, damage or repairs to any of the silver blades, just a slightly rounded or nipped tip or two. We've just had them professionally polished so they have a bright, lustrous finish. There are a few small visible age or drying splits but no breaks or damage. The ends of the sterling handle caps also show some denting. See pictures for weights and measurements.
