Gorgeous antique French hallmarked .800 (nearly sterling) silver & solid carved mother of pearl 3pc writer's set in the original box, a wax seal or sceau, dip pen and letter opener! Oh what a joy it is to find the really fine and complete sets - another wonderful and early set, in original leather box (I love boxes!) and complete! This type of set, elegant as it is, dates to the late 1800s Napoleon III era. Rarely do we find them complete; more often a piece here or there, specifically the wax seals but the one you see has not only all the pieces but also the lovely tooled burgundy or maroon leather etui, box or presentation case. All three pieces in opulent hand carved solid mother of pearl, almost like desk jewelry or works of art. There are tiny French hallmarks on the silver seal tip and portion of the dip pen, the boar's head mark designating .800 or finer French silver content (80% pure or better so just under the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). There is also at least one tiny silversmith mark but I can't quite make it out. Elegant & exceptional!
Very good to excellent condition throughout. The pen's nib is a later replacement. I see not chips, damage or repairs to any of the three pieces and even the box is as near pristine as can be! The handle and blade of the letter opener are two permanently joined separate pieces but that is surely how they were made. What a fine fine set! See pictures for all individual measurements..
