WOW! I have a pair similar to these but a bit smaller that I've had fitted as lamps and are in my other home. They are personal favorites of mine and I'm more than tempted to have the same done to this extra large pair. A full 15" tall, the pair would have been flanking ornaments to a huge mantel clock, I'm certain. They would have had massive engraved glass flutes/epergnes which have been lost to the ages. The date on these old sets would be mid-1800s. The stunning anatomical presentations of the fan tail grouse and their nests and young carved in compliment make them appealing for any room from Cabin to Lodge or office, to Country French or even English Manor. While they're technically a "Fruits of the Hunt" theme, they're not confined to it. Aren't they just too too fabulous!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. They're just in from France and while there is a bit of a blunting to the one mature bird's beak (it can be improved rather easily), they really have almost no flaws otherwise. Look them over front and back. Remarkably free of loss and certainly not in any important way. Quite simple to drill for lamp mount and wiring installation, and a fabulous array of choices in how you shade the pair. Mine have cream silk shades in a more formal setting, but that's part of the fun - make the accented home your own. At 15" in height, these are going to be amazing! The base on each is very large and stable, too, at about 10" x 6.25" in irregular oval form. We've cleaned them, given a light protective wood wax and they're ready to go. Hurry, before I turn them into lamps and find a spot in my houses. I won't find another set this large and fine in my lifetime, I'm sure.

If you've followed us for a while you know I'm a big fan of the old hand carved "Black Forest" items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, "fruits of the hunt". I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques - from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy - these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood.
