Always fascinated by the French tradition of packaging, perhaps none more fun than the old presentation boxes made specifically for the confections and chocolates of early to mid-1800s. Of finest reputation and history is the Boissier firm, and we’ve found true masterpieces with their company name, to include one many years back in fine tortoise shell that I sure wish I still owned. No firm commanded higher accolade nor prices nor audience than the Boissier firm, Paris. The hand embroidered heavy moire silk satin bag you see here is one of the later ones, possibly as late as 1900-1910, but you still see that tradition of finely crafted keepsake box or container meant to remain after the chocolates were consumed, a memento from the giver. One would have probably bought this one near the Opera, Paris, and used it later as a purse. Very unique. Metal braiding and tassel intact and the double drawstring is still perfect, too. This one had been stored away and treasured, no evidence at all of wear or deterioration to the bag anywhere. And that all important “Boissier” for the world to see. One can still find the best chocolatier firms in France and they still carry on tradition of masterful presentation. Such a fun history to collect and display. Chocolates being at that time only something the wealthy could afford, one thinks of similar goods by Hermes, Puiforcat, Odiot, top names in their respective industries. No finer name than Boissier, Paris.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, this one really is as elegant as the day it was made. No deterioration evident and no surface flaws or stains. I’m sure it was meant to be used as an evening bag after the candies and confection, chocolates or bon bons were consumed, but it’s certain this one was simply put away as a treasure. I wish we knew the occasion it was made for, as it’s surely unique in my experience of the chocolatier’s presentation goods, souvenirs. The bag is generous in size, 7.75” wide and a full 15” in length with tassel measured in. Metal braid, trim - silk embroidered ribbon flowers.
