Absolutely fabulous & RARE antique 19th century Vienna bronze 8 1/8" long desk or writing table top inkwell, a delightful reindeer pulled sleigh or sled with driver at the reins, barking DOG on top of the sled and all with the original tole or cold painted decoration! We've not gotten too much into Vienna bronzes over the years but I simply had to have this one, I've never seen another comparable! No maker or foundry marks that I've found so far but the style and detail easily rivals that of Franz Bergman, one of the more sought after names by collectors. A truly remarkable work, in thick and heavy bronze, the piece weighs just a hair under 1.5 lbs (650+ grams). Some chipping to the paint but that's to be expected with these. Very RARE subject, as I said, I've not seen another similar in all of my nearly twenty years shopping & selling. A rare find, don't miss it!
Very good condition. As noted, there is some chipping to the paint, all visible in the images. There would have originally been a pottery or glass ink pot under the inkwell lid but that has gone missing over the years. The reindeer's antlers may be a bit bent from original but no breaks or repairs to note there. There is also a small hold on the opposite side of the reindeer's neck/collar where another segment of the reins would have gone. See pictures for all measurements.
