Fabulous vintage c. 1930 Scottish W & AK Johnston, Edinburgh, Terrestrial Globe on Turned Wood Stand, Edinburgh marks with wonderful decorative and visual appeal! Great for desk or writing table top display, not too large and definitely attractive from a decorator’s point of view. It shows present-day St. Petersburg, Russia as Leningrad (likely made after 1924) and Constantinople rather than Istanbul, indicating that it’s pre- 1930. So, we’d have to say it likely dates from 1927-1931. A similar piece online states that the stand was provided by Kittinger Company, one of the leading American furniture makers of the 20th Century (though I can’t personally verify this). Very fine quality for a table globe of this period and probably was intended for home use. Kittinger sold and marketed the globe as a whole, with their label on the cartouche. The globe incorporates gores by the famous and prolific British globe maker, W. & A.K. Johnston. The marking or label on the globe itself reads: "8 INCH, Terrestrial Globe by W.&A.K. Johnston Limited, Geographers, Engravers, Printers, Edinburgh and also A.J. Nostrum & Co., Sole United States Agents" (then illegible). Additional info below the label reads: Railways, Cables, International Date Line, the description of latitude & longitude and then "PRINTED IN EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND Copyright”.
Very good condition. There is a bit of surface scuffing or marring on the west coast of the US and some loss to the paper Zodiac dial around the August area. No other notable damage. Otherwise, the stand is in great shape, a wonderful piece! See pictures for all measurements.
