Antique French Boulle Box, Charles X Era, c.1830, Casket in Wood
This is an imperfect c.1830s French box, but it's so beautiful we had to offer it to our customers. The ruffle-carved edging and the other style features help us to date it c.1830s and during the reign of Charles X of France, when this decorative style was at its apex. The colorful boulle work is an inlay of brass, neatly engraved and cut and filled with the casein materials experimented with in that time, and which predate modern moldable, cartable "plastics". Made from natural proteins of milk, it was a fine mimic for exotic materials of the era. Creating faux pearl, faux turquoise, shell, etc., and is identified by both color, texture, and the tendency to craze as you see it in the blue sections in particular. Still, a lovely old thing. The brass stringing is all in place. The wood is lovely, the ebony finish that remained popular through the Napoleon III era, as well, in the fine old table boxes that were so popular through the 19th century. Measurements are noted on the photos.
Good to very good condition. You will note that the flaw that keeps it from being excellent, and keeps its price low, is that it has some warp to the top half. All visible in our photos, which we've presented for your examination. Some light surface mars, typical of age (this is almost 200 years old, remember), and a lovely interior of natural wood finish. Wonderful for a gentleman's dressing table, to hold watch, cufflinks, pocket coins, etc., overnight. No working key for the lock at listing time. A beautiful bit of imperfection that will become your favorite "in full use" antique. Sometimes the perfect ones are too precious to actually use as they were intended when made.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
