Antique Black Forest Carved Bears, A Wall Cabinet, Coin Bank - 3 Bears Fiddle & Dance
One of the most unique and appealing old 19th century Black Forest furnishings, boxes ever, this one is a wall-hanging cabinet that has a slot for use as a coin bank. One look and you'll be smitten, as am I, with this charming old item. Entirely hand carved in wood, it's topped by a bear playing music on fiddle with bow, for a pair of bas relief bears who dance across the front panel. Elegantly styled, it's got great detailing in the cabriole or fronton that tops it, and in the lower skirting and legs. It's made to either stand on desk top or hang on the wall. It opens from the back, making it a little safer as a bank. There is a lock but it's not complete and therefore not lockable at listing time. (see images). But closed and hanging on the wall, it's a darling decorative piece. Measurements are noted on our photos, but it's slightly less than 11" tall overall.
Very good condition for age and type, but not without a flaw we must note for you. That carved front panel with 2 dancing bears was at one time broken or split from shrinkage (more likely). It has been repaired ages ago, but you can see the line where the panels were rejoined and traverses the bears at ankle height. That flaw aside, (already considered in our pricing), it's such a splendid and rare carved antique, I couldn't pass it by. Found in France. No other chips or cracks to note. No evidence of any wood worm infestation at all. Lock is incomplete. No working key at listing time.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
