Spectacular and the old early style, too. This is a mid-1800s hand carved wood casket, entirely carved of wood, a forest scene with vines, oak leaves, acorns and that fabulous pair of birds carved in the Victorian era Animalier movement or tradition on top. The size makes it all the more appealing. At widest, it is a full 14.5". It's also 7.5" front to back and rises an impressive 7.75" in height overall. The interior retains the old velvetine lining which remains in very good condition, too. No odors, no cracks and no restoration. There is one flaw to note: the backside of one wing shows the place where it is chipped off. From the front, you're not even going to notice it's abbreviated, but we'll bring it to your attention as you look over this fabulous box. The natural setting that decorates the box is charming and rich with acorns and forest leaves, branches, vines.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The one chipped wing we've mentioned and pointed out on our photos. There is a long leaf behind the birds, also chipped off. I would mention the inner lid would have had a fabric covered card panel as a finishing touch, and it is no longer with the box as you can see. But a very small and easy project to remake one for it so you'll have a complete and glorious antique you'll treasure. One more mention: it does not have a working key at listing time. We do try to match a working key from our stash of spares, but for now it's priced without. If we match one, we'll annotate our listing text. If not, please know we tried but did not find one.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
