Fine Victorian Needlepoint Tapestry , Girls and Parrot in Original c.1840s Frame, 19" x 18.25"
The visible needlepoint tapestry, sampler, in this one is 16" x 15.25" and the outer frame makes it 19" x 18.25" & 1" thick to hang. Ready to go on your wall, it is unglazed now but should have a glass cut for it once it arrives at destination. The glass has been removed for safe shipment. The panel is likely the work of a young girl, 7-12 or so, and is a wonderful scene. Exotic bird, parrot tempts the one girl and delights the other as they enjoy a pastoral outdoor scene. The restful charming panel is as close to a painting as one gets in stitchery. Lush blending of color, nice fill of the space in aperture. All in all, a very appealing subject, nicely framed and perfect for your home.
Very good to excellent for age and type, you can see the very edge of the old panel, stretched and framed. The stitches help us date it, and are the smaller mid-size stitches somewhere between petitpoint and grospoint needlepoint. Typical of early Victorian and before, the panel will date c.1840 or earlier. No cuts, holes, and no deteriorated or moth damaged yarns. Both wool and silk used on this one. Light fading to the yarns, which it typical for age.
