A superb example of the 18th and 19th century French paste gem jewelry, full parure in original box. The French were famous for the way they worked gems in sterling silver in the 18th and 19th century, and this is a prime example of why. Remember, white gold was not invented until someone put palladium with gold alloy in late 19th century, not really marketed until about 1912, and platinum, though evidence of use goes back to Ancient Egyptian times, was rare and also hugely expensive, so not much used in jewelry until 20th century, really. That meant that 'white' settings from France were much in demand and highly coveted as the white metal so beautifully showed off diamonds and white sapphires, and also the fabulous 'faux' French paste gems as you see in this incredible set. You can see the truth of that in this early 1800s set. This set has over 23 carats of paste stone, all looking exactly like fine diamonds - great cut and clarity, put to a lovely large pendant and matching chandelier "day to night" earrings you will love wearing. There are more than 10 carats of the old French paste gems on each earring and another 2-3 carats on the matching pendant. They radiate around a central large half pearl, I believe it is a mabe pearl as it is slightly off-round. Very lovely! The set would be superb for a bride - that "something old", as well as her own keepsake of her special day. You'll find no end of enjoyment in owning, displaying and sharing this beautiful antique parure. The set is in the original presentation box, as you can see, and will stay together just as shown. As noted, the earrings are 'day to night' which means they come apart so that only the smaller part is worn during the day, the long dangles added on for evening attire.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. I initially thought there was one smaller stone missing, but I realized it is only slightly smaller and is definitely there. Not a single stone gone, the set is entirely original and beautifully preserved. The stones are a varied constellation of sizes, the largest being very impressively size at 7mm in diameter as a cushion cut (2 on each earring) and the large mabe natural pearl is a full 10mm across, slightly off-round. There are more than 10 carats of fine old original French paste stones on each earring and another 2-3 carats on the matching pendant. Looks like a $million dollar set of diamonds, but in fact is just very fine faux from mid-180q0s French jewelry makers. Finest quality! The ear wires are 18k yellow gold, the rest is finest French silver. Box is original to this set, will stay with it for protection and value.
