As you can see in the final photo, where this 'bar bear' is shown with a more usual sized one we typically find, this bear is really HUGE. At 14" tall, he's one impressive big boy, and the carving detail is magnificent - best ever! Expressive face, perfect anatomical study, these were popular in the 1800s and we'd say this extra large example is probably late 1800s from the carver's skill, fine detail. The glassware is not original. I will say that right up front. It would have more likely been a clear or engraved glass decanter and matching cordials, but at least what is paired with him is period, consistent in age with the bear, or within 20 years of his age. One might choose to change out the glassware at some point, and we might find something in the meantime that is perfect and more accurate for the bear, but we wanted to get him listed well ahead of the Holidays and winter, when everyone is looking to add these to their decor. If we find better match for glassware, we will update the listing. Meanwhile, this is the best we've ever ever had, largest by far, and one spectacular Black Forest bear!
Very good to excellent condition, no chips or cracks or breaks or restorations on that large 14" tall carved bear bar stand. The carving is exquisitely fine, as you can see in our images. Carved from a single log, the base and bear would have had only the forked branches added in which hold the cordials. Imagine carving away everything that is NOT this bear! From the Animalier era, 1800s, and a spectacular find. Don't miss it. We'll never find another this big or good. Glassware is, as noted, not the original set. You will want to replace it over time, but it fits for listing and we'll watch for better fit and replace, noting listing in meantime. Don't wait, though - he won't last! Too big and fine and unique!
