Antique Porcelain Plate, Raised Gold w/ Exotic Birds - Unsigned, 'Celeste' Blue
While this elegant Sevres plate does not have a maker mark for the "Royal Porcelain Manufactory, of Sevres", on back, everything about it affirms our own opinion of it being from the workshops of Sevres, France. We have seen some plates and pieces of this quality and style which have come out of English companies like Coalport, but we most often see those marked with the English marks. While many Sevres pieces do carry marks, not all of them do, and we stand behind our assessment of these being Sevres even though the piece is unsigned. We will be listing several similar pieces from my own collection and which have been collected over many years' time. They're rare to find, wonderful to own and perfect as decorative cabinet plates, displayed proudly, as they have been in my own home for years. The signature 'Sevres celeste blue' glaze is set off spectacularly with the raised gold ornamentation, a cartouche framework for the hand painted exotic birds, these are often referred to as ornithological plates. The old French raised gold normally does test as having 22K gold in the enamel, and I'm sure if we were to test, this will be an example of that heavy impasto gold enameling, too. We'd date this and our other pieces to earliest 1800s to as late as 1840.
Very good condition, without any chips or cracks, no hairlines to diminish investment value or our hedonistic enjoyment of these rich elegant old porcelain pieces from one of the world's finest sources, the Sevres region of France.
