Wonderful antique early Victorian era c. 1850s 13" wide Chinoiserie style Chinese export lacquer sewing box, an opulent chest with gold enamel figural decoration, fitted interior, slide out front drawer and many original tools or implements! This is one of three mid 1800s Chinoiserie style boxes that we're listing this week so, if you're a collector, be sure to browse our current inventory. This one the smaller of the two sewing boxes and we also have a huge campaign or traveler's writing chest with slope or lap desk, quite rare where these old Chinese lacquer pieces are concerned. This one also with some wear or loss to the gold enamel decoration but enough to get an idea of its once original grandeur. Original bronze side handles and the interior with a lift out tray complete with removable boxes, pin cushion, lidded compartments with gold enamel decoration and a host of the original sewing tools or implements. The slide out drawer appears to be writing related with a center panel for writing, pen tray to the left and spaces to the right for stamps or small glass ink pots that have gone missing. Wonderful visual & decorative appeal!
Very good condition, age & materials considered. As noted and evident in the images, the gold enamel decoration on the exterior is worn. There are a few external nips or chips to the lacquer but no major damage. There does appear to be some old fill at the front corners, where the flat front panel meets the angled sides. The original carved & gilded wood feet are intact, the foo dragon or lion's paw type as were common with these boxes. Some of the interior contents have breaks or chips, all visible in the images. See pictures for all measurements.
