Such a beautiful snuff box, or patch box at 2.5" diameter, this is a memorial of some sort to the date 8 February, 1919. It bears such engraved notation and provides a most intriguing mystery. I did try to look up whatever it might commemorate in history, but haven't settled on a possible. Perhaps it is simply a marriage date, a retirement date, a birth or death date. Beautiful in the machined "guilloche" manner of surface decoration, it has a full compliment of 18k gold on the interior (vermeil) that makes it almost jewel-like. I can think of a lot of things to contain within, and surely you can, too. The silversmith's mark is shown, but I didn't take the time to look it up since we already have a date. The profile Mercury mark 1 is a, export guarantee for .950/1000 pure silver, the highest standard in the world for "sterling". The French silver is of thicker heavier gauge and resists dents for that reason. Retains and is of higher value for that reason and those more akin to aesthetic. No one does silver quite like the French, do they? Box is 1" high, 2.5" in diameter.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Interior's vermeil layer of 18k gold is full and richly gold, still. Almost no evidence of polishing loss. The exterior of the box has some surface abrasions that show in our extremely enlarge images, but which disappear into the guilloche decorative surface. A real beauty. Elegant and rich in the hand.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
