Antique Victorian era or Napoleon III era cigar case, this one in a tortoise shell patterned papier mache in the French manner. Inlaid with a lot of beautiful old mother of pearl, it still retains a lovely original fine leather and silk satin lining into which 6 or so cigars (or your spectacles and key and a credit card) can be tucked. Yes, I used to use these for an evening clutch or after-hours clutch for my business cards, too, when I worked for Paramount, Inc. It was always a great ice-breaker and made hobnobbing easier. This one is not real tortoise shell, but has the look of it. It's very nicely preserved and has a fine silvered metal fitting that clasps tightly and well and looks lovely, all these many years later. This is a c.1860-80s case. Seems to me to have never been used at all.
Very good to excellent condition throughout for age and type. The panels on exterior are of papier mache, in the French manner. Inlays of really pearlescent mother of pearl in floral and leaves with silver inlaid stems make it a case for either man or woman. Fine leather and silk interior is the old original and hasn't much if any evidence of use. Very well preserved and no chips or cracks to the cover panels. Leather baffles allow for expansion to hold 3 cigar on each side. Measurements are noted on the photos. Great as a gift idea!
