Another of the more beautiful boxes from a time that produced the most stunning table boxes ever, this finely crafted ebeniste's showpiece is from the Napoleon III era, (roughly c.1850-70) and shows the art at its apex. Fine exotic kingwood parquetry ever, having lasted the century and a half with almost no loss or damage. Elegant serpentine form adds to the luxurious elegance. A tumbling block parquet up top is accented by the more typical chevron placement of the grains of this distinctive exotic wood. This one is being listed without a key, though the lock mechanism is complete and should work. We'll search through our stash of old casket keys just in case, but we're listing and pricing today without key. This is one that, when I opened it, I felt certain it was going to have a lock plate signed by either TAHAN, Vervelle, P. Sormani, or Giroux. Those 4 makers and purveyors of finest quality goods in the 19th century lead the pack and were the standard to aspire to. Alas, this one is not signed, but has every evidence of that same high quality. We know that not all of the boxes by those makers did end up with signed lock plates, and I would not hesitate to suggest this is a TAHAN box.

Very good to excellent for age and type. The box is without warp, without lift or loss in the fine crafted inlays. Just look at the ways the wood and precious materials are worked on this one. Beautifully accented by all that brass pencil edging trim around the upper perimeter and again in brass stringing outlining the box and also defining the joints of the tumbling block-worked woods. Not a single one lost or lifted. Very little sign of any loss at all, and everything tightly adhered (stringing and pencil-edging. The work more complicated by the serpentine shape of this one. Top quality, well preserved. The measurements are also noted on the photos, but it is the original form for a gentleman's gloves, and the drop-front also suggests it as such. As well, the measurements: 910.25" x 4.25" and 3.5" tall when closed, would present it as a glove box, which often get used now as document boxes or jewelry chests. No finer than this!

Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
