Oil painting on board, c.1831 Artist signed: H.Dumont (signed on back)
An exceptionally fine "Nature Morte" or trompe l'oeil still life, bird hanging by a string. The painting is #1 of 2 we have by this artist of this same subject. They're offered separately so look for the other one if you want them both. The artist, whom we know little about other than that he/she was very adept at this genre, has signed and dated the work on backside in heavy pencil and has dated the work, also, c.1831. H. Dumont is the signature. This type of painting is rare and exceptional and highly sought after, often without frame at all. The panel is painted in oil on wood panel, and the frame is one added later on. The panel is about the same size as the outer measurement of the frame, so could conceivably be removed from this mounted frame and handled in another way/frame that does not cover up parts of the painting. But this is how we have purchased the painting and it is how it will remain until someone else decides to change it's presentation. The painting is fabulous, as you can see. We get a glare, of course, but I can tell you these are much finer in person, display beautifully. We only recently sold several we've collected over time, and note that they go out as quickly as I list them from my collection. I have 2 others to list in weeks ahead, so if this isn't your favorite, come back. No real damage to the board panel nor the oil painting, a bit of light age showing is all.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. I find no chips nor breaks in the wooden panel on which the artist's work is so beautifully accomplished. No loss to the oil painting that isn't just very light evidence of the age. Nearly 200 years old, it has been framed probably 100 years ago with a frame that overlaps the painting more than I would have preferred, yet shows it off nicely, too. Look at it from backside photos to see what I mean. One could remove this frame and have it framed larger to show more of the painting. We'll leave it to the next owner. Measurements noted on the photos. The frame is also antique, nicely preserved, showing age.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
