A most amazing old hand carved wood frame, this Master carver has even carved all the leaves with their gains - a true work of sculptural artistry that is quite unusual. We'll show you enlarged sections so you can examine the intricately carved detail, but it's best seen in its actual size and form, at 17" tall. It might well have originally housed a mirror. I think that would be a perfect use for this one, hanging on a bathroom wall or bedroom - or really just about anywhere in a Country French or English Manor decor. Circa 1850-80, a Victorian Grand Tour souvenir of Switzerland's Black Forest artisans, for certain. There is not a glass in it right now. It's simpler and less costly to send without, and we wanted to leave the option of a mirror insert to its next owner. Very simple to take a measurement and have either one cut at your local hardware store (Home Depot, Lowe's). Outer measurement is 17" x 13" and it's 1" at thickest point. The aperture is 9.5" x 7.5" if you want to consider it for a favorite photo.
Very good to excellent condition, I see that the tail of the bird to left of screen has a chipped off tail. A couple of leaves might have a tip off, but nothing very noticeable nor distracting. You can examine it closely. It's relatively symmetrical, which would suggest that an entire leaf is missing in the upper left of screen, by the large cluster of grapes. But it really works as it is and the spot doesn't seem out of order or place. Just wanted to draw your attention to it, in case you've missed that small flaw. Truly, this is the most amazing Black Forest frame we've ever owned, I think - rises nearly to the quality of French carvers, Gueret Freres, though there is not a signature on back so we're unsure if it might be from that highly regarded firm. Quite possible. I have purchased it in France, as well. Gorgeous old thing!

If you've followed us for a while you know I'm a big fan of the old hand carved "Black Forest" items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, "fruits of the hunt". I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques - from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy - these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood.
