A remarkable 16.5" square box, entirely hand carved in wood, lined in old French fabric, and presenting in very fine condition, indeed. I have not seen such a large but relatively flat box, and would assume it might have been for a family bible but it's not deep enough. More likely it was a documents box or even perhaps a special box for a prized cashmere shawl (boîte a chales). We can't know, alas, but can certainly appreciate its inherent beauty and the true treasure it was and is. The work that's gone into it and the quality elevate it far above it's flattened surface. It'll be your favorite center table box! The old lock and lock plate are gone from this box, as you can see in the images, but could certainly be replaced with a salvage one. No lock nor key at listing time, however.
Very good to excellent for age and type, I see hardly anything at all that looks to be a flaw. Surely a few of the pointed carved flower petals must be chipped, but if so they certainly don't stand out. Carved on all sides, intricately and by a Master! The box is square. I don't know how my photographer made it look rectangular in that one photo of the top, but it's an illusion. It is square with deeply canted corners and with elaborate carved decoration. I would say it's oak. The inside measurements are 12 7/8” wide, 13 1/8” front to back and 1 3/4” tall at the sides (with more height toward the center).
