Fabulous find! This tall pair of hand carved Caryatid figures, pillars will base and pediment and a decidedly Roman or Classical feel to them are probably salvaged from either a large carved cabinet or perhaps from dismantled paneling in an old Villa. They would be superb additions to a wall display, or flank a door top with them and run a narrow shelf across the top to display art or fine plates over your door or window. You know the look. Work them into your cabinetry remodel for an exceptionally opulent kitchen remodel. I might do just that unless you buy these before I find the right place for them. Our large images show the carving and craftsmanship, both of which rises to sculpture rather than folk art, in my opinion. Aren't they wonderful!
Very good to excellent for age and type, and we'd date them earlier than 1850 owing to the quality. There is a mounting hold drilled into the back of each figure, which is the typical way they used to mount them to a flat surface like paneling. We have much later sets of similar figures that would have been the support post to a large bar or buffet, but these are earlier and we think cabinetry paneling rather than supports. The height is 15.5", so extra large and impressive, too. You can see that the tip of the nose of the female figure has a small chip. Also there is an age crack to the wood on one spot on the base of that same figure. Both visible in our images for your review. The wood is, I would say, walnut but might be rosewood - very heavy old forest growth solid hardwood. Measurements also appear on the images.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
