This elegant old pink opaline 'egg' shaped trinket casket in a rare small 'ring box' size - hard to find these small ones. It begs to be fitted with a little ring holder or pin cushion to hold and display (or gift) a lovely antique jewelry item, brooch, ring, pendant or similar. I've seen this type fitted out in that way with a cushioned velvet pad made for the opening and they are lovely that way. We just love them displayed closed in our lighted vitrine, and the deeper pink on this one sets off the entire collection. The opaline glass is in fine form, as is the ormolu framework and trim up top. Hinge and clasp work just fine and the box closes tightly and smoothly. A little sprig of leaves up top and at sides, and as you can see the framework on this one is a bright gold, not a tarnished brass as many are. This would have originally been sold through the famed boutiques of the early 1800s Palais Royal, still in Paris there by the Louvre. When I was in Paris last Autumn, they were working on opening a brand new upscale shopping mall and theatre there in the old Palais Royal, which had fallen into a bit of disregard, so by now it's probably back to being a thriving location in Paris. The history, however, is fascinating. Search it out on Google.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, and rather rare to find in this small 'ring box' size, too. A gorgeous little egg without chips or cracks or hairlines, and with a superb wirework framing, fittings. There is a sort of crescent moon imperfection the blown glass, visible on one of our images, that is not a break, but is a bubble, perhaps, that elongated to form a line in the hot glass. Displays beautifully!
