In the manner of French artist Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, popular in the early to mid-1800s as France's favorite 'Realist' painter of his time, and whose subject matter included Exotic scenes of horses and battle scenes, often with Asian overtones, this needlepoint is relatively easy to date to first half of the 1800s. (NOTE: you can read a fascinating chronicle of Meissonier's fame and fall into obscurity in Ross King's book, "The Judgement of Paris"). Arabian horses mounted by exotic Middle-Eastern gentleman stroll along in a country or parade setting, a scene captured from the leisurely country manor life of the early 1800s to as late as 1860, Victorian era or perhaps even Georgian. A fabulous old needlepoint panel, and we have a much larger and similar themed one yet to list in weeks ahead in case you love this theme, all from my own collection, and all sold separately. The colors and condition are all vibrant and alive and the old original frame accents it perfectly. Group some of these fine old needlework tapestries or samplers for a fabulous wall. Remember, women were not well accepted in the tradition arts of painting and sculpture, so these needlework treasures represent the early manifestations of women's creativity and artistry. I've done needlepoint, and I've painted, and believe me, it takes lots longer to do this one stitch at a time than to paint it. Wool and silk yarns used, this one has added appeal for the inclusion of the active hound in foreground. Quite charming!
Very good condition for age and type. Framed well and in fine condition, I see no holes or damaged spots and only the normal age and light fading typical and charming in these old needlepoint samplers. The gold-matted hardwood frame on this one is exceptionally fine, I should add. A remarkable piece for the collector or decorator. Watch for more of our collection to be listed. I have some fabulous ones to list today (sold separately, great to group for display).
