Elegant antique French Louis Philippe to Napoleon III era campaign style rosewood & brass inlay 8.75" jewelry, work or table box with finished interior, brass strip inlaid exterior with royal crown topped "SM" monogram cartouche! We're not sure what this may have been used for originally, the interior base is lined in deep red velvet and the lid is in finished rosewood with a small clip like what would have held a removable mirror or folio as you see in writing travel boxes. Amazing detail to the inlay and even the interior hardware with a heavy bronze piano hinge, lock plate that extends the width of the front and side hinge supports. Of course, there are some losses to the exterior brass strip inlays, unfortunate but not all that uncommon in pieces of similar age (and even similar pieces on display in museums around the world). The crown over the monogram shows us that this was once owned by royalty. A beautiful piece, don't miss it.
Condition is as you see it. As always, we try to take and provide large, clear images of our items and hope that you peruse them fully. As noted, there are a few brass strips missing from the exterior and there is a bit of 'bubbling' to the veneer on the lid (around the cartouche, front left area). Also a few spots on the exterior around the brass inlays where it looks like someone has wood filled. Working lock with key. See pictures for measurements.
