Magnificent find! Recently in Paris (over the time Notre Dame went up in flames), and this old beauty was one of my favorite finds. A very large finest quality 19th century holy font that features the rare pate-sur-pate porcelain plaque of a crowned Madonna and Christ. Pate-sur-pate (paste on paste) is a french method of layering white glaze to gain a bas relief semi-transparent figure or design. Done also on plates and table items, it's hard to find any pieces that aren't astronomical in price these days. When I found this one, I really just couldn't leave it behind. It's my very own memorial to Notre Dame cathedral due to the timing. However, I'm not Catholic, and I am an antique dealer so up it goes for someone else out there. Look at how delicately worked it is. Often Limoges pieces, and that's likely the origin of this heavy plaque, it's as well-mounted as it can be, too. That's a dore bronze (heavy gold-mixed alloy of bronze) framework and extending holy font. Elegant in every detail. I suspect it's from the Barbedienne Foundry. Again, I think I'd have to take it all apart to find maker marks and I'm not going to do that. Experience, however, tells me what I'm seeing. Spectacular work! Measurements are noted on the photos for your review.
Very good to excellent condition, for age and type. The beveled 15.5" x 10.5" oval wood backboard is upholstered in royal blue silk velvet which has lost nearly all of its nap over the 170 or more years since this was created, leaving the blue fabric as you see it. No tears or holes, however and it nicely compliments the blue on the thick porcelain plaque. No damage at all to the figural pate-sur-pate plaque. The dore bronze framework into which the plaque is mounted is also still exceptionally fine. The hanging loop up top brings the length to 16" and you can see that the old original papered back remains. Part of why I'm not inclined to open it all up to see if I can find important valuable signatures. Will leave that to its next owner. Superb work of art, circa 1830-60!
