Fine antique French Napoleon III era burled amboyna pocket watch or rosary casket, an elegant box with mother of pearl cartouche and kingwood edging! These are most often fitted out on the inside to hold a pocket watch, this and another similar piece that we're adding today don't have the watch fittings in the base and so could be used for just about anything your imagination (and the space) allows. A place for everything, and everything gloriously in its place - and no excess is too much; that seems to have been the rule of the day. And the day was 1840-70s Napoleon III era, France, the birthplace and time for this superb pocket watch box, casket. Entirely made in fine old box wood, then veneered in burled amboyna with a striking grain pattern and trimmed out with a lovely mother of pearl cartouche! A fine example of the era, aesthetic, and immense allure these old pieces represent. Wildly popular in France and abroad, these glorious old cabinetry pieces proliferated in Napoleon III era France, and we reap the benefit of their popularity and appeal still today in those that survive. One of several fabulous old pocket watch caskets that we currently have available so, be sure to browse some while you're with us. Thanks!
Very good condition. The exterior is in wonderful shape, richly burled veneers with no losses that I can see but there may be the very slightest of bends or warps to the lid though it does close just fine (I only noticed it when looking at the enlarged photos). The interior base has a simple card panel, missing any pocket watch fittings if there originally. See pictures for all measurements.
