Very fine antique French Napoleon III era burled amboyna pocket watch or rosary casket, an elegant box with mother of pearl cartouche, kingwood edging and hand painted portrait miniature inside, a rendition of the c.1490 painting by Davide Ghirlandaio entitled "Portrait of a Young Man"! These are most often fitted out on the inside to hold a pocket watch, this and another similar piece that we're adding today don't have the watch fittings in the base and so could be used for just about anything your imagination (and the space) allows. Likely modified, this one has a hand painted portrait miniature mounted in the lid. A colorful, artist signed rendition of by the notable Italian partner Davide Ghirlandaio.
Davide Ghirlandaio (1452–1525), also known as David Ghirlandaio and as Davide Bigordi, was an Italian painter and mosaicist, active in his native Florence. His brothers Benedetto Ghirlandaio (1458–1497) and Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449–1494) were both painters, as was his nephew Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (1483–1561). Davide was an assistant to, and then a partner of, his brother, the leading painter Domenico. After Domenico’s death, Davide took over the studio and trained Domenico’s son Ridolfo. He was active in the mosaic decoration of the Orvieto Cathedral.
Very good condition. The exterior is in wonderful shape, richly burled veneers with no losses that I can see. The interior base has a simple fabric panel, missing any pocket watch fittings if there originally. See pictures for all measurements.
