Elegant & rare antique French hallmarked .800 (nearly sterling) silver cigarette or cheroot case, ornate Art Nouveau style leaves, vines and berries with "P" monogram medallion & vermeil lined interior! Much more common are the cigarette cases from England or the US, we don't really see all that many French made pieces but here's one and what a beauty! The surface of the box has a textured or hammered look to it, small dots pressed into it throughout. The leaves & vines extend up the left or hinged side and cover that corner, a beautiful panoply of winding vines, leaves and berries. The piece bears the French boar's head hallmark, used on smaller pieces of at least .800 or 80% silver content. The silversmith mark is also quite tiny but the mark on the clasp is fully legible and for Charles Murat, Paris circa 1897. The piece measures 3 1/4" x 2 1/8" and is 3/4" thick, it weighs 62 grams.
Very good condition. The inside is missing the ribbons that would have held the contents but those are easily replaced. A very slight dimple or two possible but no large dents, damage or repairs. See pictures for weight and measurements.
