A very charming late 170os to early 1800s French snuff or patch box made of horn and set with gold pique (we haven't acid-tested the gold ropes but we're sure they're karat gold just from age and condition). The inlays creating the overall circle form and floral-like decorative surface are of mother of pearl and also some coral inset around the center. Likely a snuff box, but also at this time patch boxes of similar form were in fashion. This is an early one, has its imperfections, and still is fine enough for museum display.
Very good to excellent condition. It is made of horn, inlaid with mother of pearl and coral and flattened rope-twists of gold stringing, some of it missing as you can see. I'm not going to sell it as 18k gold, haven't wanted to pull any out to do acid-test on it, but I'm quite sure that is what it is. Since bits are missing, and it's got a few true signs of it's very advanced age and use, it's a bargain to its next owner. Top is domes, sides are concave, and top fits so smoothly on bottom - these wonderful old handmade items just thrill, don't they? I love what I do! ; ) It is a petit 2.5" in diameter and .75" deep - lovely old thing!
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
