Beautiful & rare antique French hallmarked sterling silver & ornate wheel cut glass or crystal 44oz claret jug or wine pitcher with elegant Classical or French Empire styling and wonderful condition! A large bulbous body, this one stands " tall and holds roughly 44 fluid ounces! The body with wheel cut faceted top and a beautiful hobnail style pattern around the base making it shimmer like diamonds in light. The handle with fluted ribbing, crossed ribbons and culminates at the bottom in laurel leaves, the top in acanthus. There are remnants of a gold finish on the silver, it was likely original all in 18k gold on sterling "vermeil" but has faded or been worn over the years. Just enough to get a taste of gold though and the style is quite unique for a French claret jug. Very elegant! The base, collar and lid all bear the French Minerve or Minerva hallmark, the tiny number "1" within those marks means it's in .950 silver (95% pure so higher than the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). The silversmith marks appear to be for Antoine Eysen, Paris circa 1895. One of two that we're adding today, each quite different in style but both exceptional in their own way. We have one of the most extensive offerings of fine antique French sterling silver online so, be sure to browse some while you're with us. Thanks!
Very good to excellent condition. I see no damage whatsoever other than the fading/wear to the vermeil. See pictures for all measurements.
