I'm sorry my category choice isn't right. I find no accurate category on RL's choices. This is not a Black Forest pair of carvings, but they are 19th century French carved bas relief sculptures in wood, entirely hand carved and are just magnificent. If you can figure out a more apppropriate category, let me know. In any case, the superb large and undamaged pair measure approximately 20" x 13" each in a broad oval, and are a full 2" in depth, though they look even deeper, so well designed and executed is the bas relief carving. They might have been part of a paneled wall, but they're wonderful as hung art just as you see them. Each one a work of art in its own right. Anatomically and in every other way, full vignette and not just a figure set in a void space, they're quite remarkable. A fine beveled finish to the edges means you need not frame them. I would love to see them made up on doors to a large side-by-side cabinet in a Master suite, or even as a recessed bar cabinet - wouldn't they be fabulous and just "make" a room! If pinned to say a date, I'd put these c. 1850-90, give or take 10 years.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I see nothing by way of age shrinkage hairlines or cracks in the thick old heavy wood, and no chips that would detract from their original beauty. You will note a slight warp (images of them lying on flat surface) on each but it virtually disappears when hung on a wall. You might have to accommodate it somewhat if you mount them on cabinets. Beautiful patina to the old wood, satin finish. I am unsure if that is mahogany or walnut (I'm bad at wood types, sorry), but the finish has more the look of it being walnut, no red in it. Remember, you are buying both of these superb carved plaques together.
