Museum quality neo-Renaissance Italian 26.5" tall wood carte de visite frame, Italian master carver - all original with the family carte de visite photos still intact. "1969 - Egisto Cajani".
FABulous treasure I've been keeping for myself, but haven't yet found where I want to hang it. Time to list for you. This is an exceptional museum quality hand carved Italian frame, c.1869, made for a family's carte de visite photographs. All original as you see it, complete with the family's original photos included, still. There is a carved dedication which I believe refers to the family. "1969 - Egisto Cajani". I have done a cursory internet search which turned up nothing, unfortunately. But this quality bespeaks of a family of wealth and note. Just look at that carving! The chimera bottom each side are magnificent figures, both, and the slender delicate carved ribbons and those perfect anatomical studies of the birds (slight damage to a wing or two) are certainly in the quality and manner of such famed carvers as Grinling Gibbons, 1600s-1700s (England) and of Gueret Freres, 1800s (France). Exceptional in all ways! I purchased this one in France, by the way.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. I've only cleaned up the wood and waxed it lovingly. You'll see that there are a few losses. The wings on birds most obvious. A few tendrils of the Renaissance style carved details, ribbons and florals, chimera on each side bottom are perfectly preserved and just marvelous. My favorite frame ever! Measurements and more details noted in our many photos. This one deserves to be in the Louvre! I know I have it priced way too low. And that I'll always regret selling this one when it is gone. Still, I can't keep everything, can I.
