Fabulous, rare to find set of twenty-four antique French sterling silver & ebony handled 9 7/8" dinner AND 8" luncheon, dessert or entremet sized knife set with ornate silver caps & collars and original "Depose" marked steel blades, not to mention a set including a matching six piece serving set with meat carving knife, fork & gigot and salad serving fork & spoon all in a fitted storage box or chest! This is one of four great old French table knife sets that we've adding in the past few weeks but don't let that fool you as to how hard they are to find in decent condition. I've gathered these up over the last year (or more) and am just getting to polishing, photographing and listing them :). A truly superb 2pc setting for TWELVE here, all original and complete with Aesthetic style foliate accented silver caps & collars on the handles. The handles themselves in what appears to be ebony wood or with an ebonized finish. The blades are all the original pre-stainless ones, dating them to before 1912-20s when stainless steel or 'acier inoxydable' really began to be used, and are marked "C. Bonvalot, Vesoul" on one side and "Depose" on the other. Fabulous as you see them, magnificent alongside your existing fine sterling silver table service! Thanks and enjoy!
Very good condition. As noted, the blades are all the original steel ones, not stainless so they do have some visible age tarnish and/or corrosion. A few age or drying splits in the ebony wood handles, nothing other than some slight surface scuffs and possibly a bit of tarnish to the silver caps & collars. The knife set is in a fitted storage or presentation box but we're not sure if it's original to the set, likely not judging from the slightly larger spaces for the handles of the serving pieces but they do all fit, store and present well in it and the age is right for the set. There are some losses to the black covering on the box but both clasps and top handle are there and secure. There is a bit of chipping to the tines on the salad fork and a chip or something on the bowl of the salad spoon. We could likely file them down a bit, just let us know if you'd prefer that. See pictures for weights and measurements.
