A fabulous and extra large elaborately hand carved jewelry, documents or glove box, desk box, c. 1900. This is a very fine example of the hand carved Black Forest goods available to Grand Tour travelers, and surely was someone's souvenir of theirs. You will note that it's got turn of the century featured aesthetic in the decorative carved "stringing" and also those cabriole legs. A still life of fruit, berries up top make it a show stopper. This would have, in its time, been a glove box. But these larger long ones are perfect for documents, deeds, old family letters and your own love letters, should you be fortunate enough to have them still. Or just to accent your Country French or Manor home or office.
Very good to excellent condition throughout on this one. I find no warp, no cracks and no chips of any note, which is really quite rare. There is a working lock, but we do not have th4 told original working key at listing time. If we can locate one to fit and work, we'll annotate the listing and raise our price a bit, too. Interior has the old original silk lining, slightly tattered at a point or two for its advanced age, but it is complete, still lovely. The box is large at 14" longest, 6.5" front to back and 5.5" tall when closed. Often these were carved with birds, or a hunt themed vignette up top, but this one with fruit is just gorgeous, isn't it. You might find it's a table centerpiece, holding your tea and sweetener packets - you'll find the perfect spot and use.
