A spectacular pair of small French solid wood frames trimmed out in elaborately crafted more bronze appliqué and aperture mat, and they still house the original intaglio prints in a sepia tone. Charming as they are, or to use for your own favorite family photos. These are wall frames, mounted on back with a hanging loop. They measure 7.5" x 6.5" and are 1" thick, rather heavy. The aperture shows a 3.25" diameter, and both cover glass panels are original and intact in full. The backs are even still sealed on this pair of Empire frames. We do believe these are 1st Empire and so date earliest 1800s. The inclusion of the prints popular from reign of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette and the very heavy weight of the old forest growth wood lend to the earlier dates. At latest, they might be from the revival era known as Second Empire, the reign of Louis Napoleon, c.1850-70, but I do think these are from Napoleon Bonaparte's era, instead. A superb pair. Look at the fine work on those bronze appliqués, they are of finest quality, tightly chiseled and cast without flaw. These are the type of fames I love best for my own family photo and these are very tempting to pull from inventory into my own displays, so don't leave them with me too long or I'll fill them and hang. BTW, these are fabulous for doll house collectors, for their Bru doll settings, rooms.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, and remember you are buying the pair of 2 matching frames. The prints carry not much value, though they help us to date the set of frames. The frames and their opulently crafted more bronze mounts are museum pieces and are each in excellent undamaged condition. Cover glass in each is original and undamaged. Sealed backings tell us they've never been opened. You may wish to replace the old print with your family photo, and it will be simple to do so by opening the backings. Measurements noted on the photos and above.
