Artist's signature: MAXIME

The subject is a typical French one and the genre is known there as "Nature Morte". Typically composed of the birds and animals that will comprise the next meal, the paintings are not of cruelty, but almost little prayers of thanks for the feast. They link aesthetically to the old Flemish paintings, and decoratively to the carvings on the Black Forest, for cabin or lodge, or Country French decor. Great for office or den, as well as kitchen, but these would usually have hung in a kitchen originally. The artist has signed this lovely old oil painting, "MAXIME", though we know nothing more about our artist.
Good to very good condition for age and type. The oil painting is nicely done, well preserved, with perhaps a little old restoration to the left edge beyond the duck's feet. There are no holes nor tears in the canvas at this time. I think it has been professionally bonded to a newer linen canvas to maintain and preserve the old canvas. This is a typical practice in France. We see it often done. Some of the old canvases have become so fragile over time. This saves them and is archival quality work. The frame is a nice old solid oak frame with gesso appliqué filet around the aperture. That filet has some loss, as you can see. Displays nicely. I have fallen in love with this genre over time and appreciate the subjects as did those whose sustenance depended upon them.
