A fabulous little gem of a jewelry box, this mid-1800s French kingwood parquet chest is a dainty 8" x 5.5" and is just under 4" tall when closed. The beautiful old hardwood veneer in elevated by the copious amount of dore bronze trim, from paw foot and acanthus cabriole legs to a lush escutcheon at the key hole to the ball gadroon border to that slightly domed top. And the intricate parquet work in that raised cartouche is nothing short of a work of ebeniste's art. Just look at the patterning. All intact, it's a lovely old chest and shows the best skills of the cabinetry makers of Paris, 19th century. The rounded corners were no simple feature to veneer, and this little chest has those in beautiful condition. I would expect that lock plate to bear an engraved signature of Tahan or Vervelle, actually, as the quality certainly achieves the name. Alas this one is unsigned. Very like several we've had that were signed and I do think it is likely Vervelle.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Casket dates c.1840-60. The interior is fitted out in a heavy silk satin. Still has the old beveled mirror set in the lid and without damage. I'm not positive if the grey silk satin is original. though it's certainly old. It might also have been pale blue and has lost color over time. It has one shredded silk area at side, as you can see, and is otherwise in very nice condition. This is an old box! The bottom panel shows age cracks if you tip it up to look, but they don't have any impact on the box at all and I see no other issues with the wood. Key is the old original decorative one to match the dore bronze.
