A splendid hand carved late 1800s Black Forest jewelry cabinet, 3 levels and 5 compartments with their original and very nicely preserved blue silk velvet linings. An elaborately carved exterior and a pair of game birds carved up top with long leafy fronds of forest fauna. Finely crafted cabriole legs and even the old working lock and key with this one. The lid lifts up and the 2 levels of jewelry compartments hinged to swing outward to easily view and access your jewelry within. The height is 11" and it is 10.5" wide, 6.5" deep.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, with amazing carving all over all sides, including the back. The birds up top are wonderful anatomical renderings, and all the legs remain on each one. There is, however, evidence of an old restoration that can be seen from back, and I think that the cluster of leaves has broken away at some point and been restored to the piece. You look closely, you can see the line there. That brings a suspicion that perhaps the birds broke away with it because I can also see that one leg has been restored. You've got to greatly enlarge this piece and then point this out, however, as it's been very nicely restored. The taller of the 2 birds has, likewise, an old restoration to his neck. You really don't notice these in person, looking at it without enlargement, but I want to point these out to you so you can evaluate in our enlarged photos. We did take this into account in our price already.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
